Boeing 787 Fuel-Switch Test Finds No Fault, AI171 Cause Remains Unresolved
India’s government told Parliament this week that manufacturer-level testing found no abnormality in the locking mechanism of a Boeing 787 fuel-control switch, but the result does not determine what caused Air India Flight AI171 to crash. The July 2026 update from Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the switch and the structural integrity of its locking detents were examined, while inspection of the complete thrust control module remains underway at the manufacturer’s facility in Seattle.
The tested switch came from a different Air India Boeing 787-8 involved in a February 2026 London Heathrow Bengaluru flight. A pilot reported a possible issue involving whether the switch remained positively latched in its operating position, and Air India grounded that aircraft for inspection. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation ordered original-equipment-manufacturer testing as part of continuing-airworthiness checks.
The finding is relevant because fuel-control switches are also under scrutiny in the AI171 investigation. That Boeing 787-8 crashed shortly after departing Ahmedabad for London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, killing 260 people. The preliminary investigation said both fuel-control switches transitioned from their normal operating position to the fuel-cutoff position, interrupting fuel supply to the engines. It did not determine why those transitions occurred.
What the test result establishes
At the component level, the result means the detailed examination did not identify an abnormality in the tested switch or reproduce a structural problem in its locking detents. That narrows the specific technical concern raised after the February flight and gives regulators a concrete inspection result rather than an assumption based only on the pilot’s report.
It does not, however, amount to a universal finding about every switch under every combination of installation, loading, wear and operating conditions. Nor is it a direct examination result for the switches installed on AI171. The distinction matters: investigators can use a separate-aircraft event to identify a question worth testing, but the answer from that component cannot automatically be transferred to the accident aircraft or its sequence of events.
The absence of a reproduced defect is still useful. Accident and airworthiness investigations advance not only by finding failed parts, but also by testing and progressively constraining plausible explanations. A negative result can reduce the weight assigned to one suspected mechanism, provided investigators document the test conditions and compare them with the relevant aircraft records and physical evidence. It cannot by itself explain an observed system transition.
Why the larger module still matters
The continuing examination covers the complete thrust control module, which houses the fuel-control switches. A switch-level inspection addresses the condition of the switch and its detents; a module-level examination can address the assembled unit and its interfaces. Those are different scopes of work, which is why the government’s two statements “no abnormality” in the switch and testing still underway on the module are not contradictory.
For a final finding, investigators must integrate physical examinations with flight-recorder information, aircraft and maintenance records, operational evidence and human-factors analysis. No single stream necessarily establishes the sequence on its own. The central unresolved question is not merely whether one tested detent appeared structurally normal, but what evidence explains the transitions recorded during the AI171 flight and whether any technical, operational or other contributing factors were involved.
This is also why the update does not justify speculation about crew actions. The preliminary information established switch-position changes, not their cause. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has said that all probable causes and contributing factors remain under investigation, and its safety inquiry is intended to establish findings rather than assign civil or criminal liability.
The remaining procedural milestones
The Ministry of Civil Aviation says the AI171 inquiry is in its final stages and rejects suggestions that the report has been delayed. In a separate court filing, the AAIB said a draft final report could be ready by October, subject to pending external dependencies. Under the international investigation process described by the bureau, the draft is then provided to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, representing the aircraft’s state of design and manufacture, for comment before completion.
No new Boeing 787 operating requirement was announced with the switch-test result. For operators and passengers, the immediate consequence is therefore investigative rather than operational: one examined mechanism did not show an abnormality, but the broader system assessment and causal analysis are unfinished.
The disciplined engineering reading is narrow but meaningful. The test reduces uncertainty around the particular switch taken from the February flight; it does not clear every fuel-control component, resolve the AI171 accident sequence or substitute for the final report. The decisive safety value will come from how investigators connect component findings, module testing and recorded evidence into one supported explanation and then identify any corrective action that explanation requires.
