FAA Investigates American Airlines 737 Bird Strike After Safe Return
An American Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 181 people returned safely to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, after its crew reported a bird strike and an engine problem shortly after departure. Passengers saw flames coming from an engine, but the aircraft landed without further reported incident. The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation, while American Airlines has removed the jet from service for a maintenance inspection.

American Flight 1760 had been bound for Charlotte, North Carolina. The crew declared an emergency, circled back to Myrtle Beach and landed with emergency personnel standing by. American Airlines said it was working to move the affected customers onward to Charlotte.
The central technical question remains unanswered: What damage, if any, did the reported strike cause inside the engine or elsewhere on the aircraft? No official inspection result, damage assessment or bird species identification has been released. The flames, popping noises reported by a witness and the crew’s engine-problem declaration establish the seriousness of the operational response, but they do not by themselves establish an engine failure or its precise mechanism.
The inspection separates visible symptoms from actual damage
Removing the aircraft from service allows the airline’s maintenance team to determine its condition before it returns to passenger operations. American Airlines has not disclosed the scope, duration or preliminary results of that work. Until the inspection is complete, it would be premature to conclude whether the event produced limited damage, substantial engine damage or effects elsewhere on the airplane.
That distinction matters because a bird encounter is an impact event, not a single standardized failure mode. The consequences depend on factors including the number and mass of the birds, the aircraft’s speed and where the impact occurs. In a Federal Aviation Administration review of bird-strike certification requirements, the agency explained that impact severity is strongly influenced by kinetic energy, which increases with mass and the square of velocity. The review also noted that real events can involve several birds and affect multiple aircraft areas.
That regulatory background should not be interpreted as a finding about Flight 1760. The bird species, number of birds involved, impact energy and damaged components have not been officially identified. Certification requirements establish defined resistance and continued-safe-flight standards under specified conditions; they do not mean every real-world strike will leave an aircraft undamaged.
Runway debris can provide a second evidence stream
Airport operations workers reported finding bird debris on the runway and collecting larger pieces. Recovered remains can be sent to the Smithsonian Institution for species identification. That analysis can help connect physical material to the wildlife involved and improve the quality of strike records, but no species result has been announced in this case.
Species identification has a broader airport-safety purpose. Wildlife management depends on understanding which animals are present, where strikes occur and how activity changes over time. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s wildlife-strike guidance notes that airports subject to federal certification rules have responsibilities to mitigate wildlife hazards and that pilots should report hazards to air traffic control. Those procedures support warnings, airport response and the collection of data rather than proving why a particular encounter occurred.
The scale of that reporting system is substantial: more than 24,000 wildlife strikes were reported in the United States in 2025, according to FAA database figures cited for this incident. That number provides operational context, not evidence of a fleetwide Boeing 737 issue or a trend involving American Airlines. Most importantly, it does not predict the damage from any individual strike.
What investigators still need to establish
The FAA investigation can compare the crew’s report, air traffic communications, recovered remains and the aircraft’s documented condition. Airport and airline records may also clarify the operational response. None of those sources has yet produced a public technical conclusion about the engine.
For the 181 people aboard, the immediate safety outcome is clear: the crew returned the aircraft to Myrtle Beach and landed safely. The next consequential milestone is the inspection result. Until American Airlines or the FAA releases it, the visible flames remain an observed symptom not an official measure of damage, proof of complete engine failure or a basis for conclusions about other aircraft.
