Jeep Recalls 328,381 Grand Cherokees Again as Rear Springs May Detach
Jeep Grand Cherokee owners face another suspension repair after complaints continued following earlier recall work. FCA US is recalling 328,381 SUVs because their rear coil springs may have been installed incorrectly and could detach while the vehicle is being driven.

The action covers 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L models, 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids. It replaces two earlier rear-spring recalls, identified as 23V413 and 26V051, rather than merely adding another notice alongside them. Vehicles addressed under a previous campaign may therefore need to return to a dealer.
Complaints continued after earlier recall work
The central issue is not simply the size of the affected population. A federal investigation opened in December 2025 after 20 owners reported rear coil-spring problems in vehicles that were supposed to have been repaired. Chrysler separately identified 70 additional complaints, while FCA said it was aware of at least 406 warranty claims involving rear coil springs.
Those figures do not establish that every earlier repair was ineffective or that every recalled SUV contains an improperly positioned spring. They do explain why the matter remained open after prior actions: reports continued to arrive from the field, including reports involving vehicles believed to have already received a remedy.
FCA says the springs may be incorrectly installed and can become displaced. A coil spring is a load-bearing suspension component, so detachment while moving creates a safety concern even though no crashes or injuries have been reported in association with this issue. The recall is intended to correct the condition before it produces that outcome.
The revised repair centers on the lower isolators
Dealers will replace the rear coil-spring lower isolators at no charge. The available recall information does not fully explain the isolator’s engineering role, why replacing it differs from the previous remedies or whether every vehicle will receive replacement parts without an initial inspection. It would therefore be premature to describe the component itself as defective or to assign the issue to a specific manufacturing process.
What is clear is that the new campaign changes the prescribed dealer action and supersedes the earlier recalls. That distinction matters for owners: completion of a previous recall does not necessarily close the current safety obligation. Recall status follows the vehicle identification number and the active campaign, not simply whether an owner remembers having suspension work performed before.
The affected model years also span three related but distinct vehicles. The Grand Cherokee L is the three-row, long-wheelbase version; the standard Grand Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee 4xe use the same family name but represent separate configurations. Owners should not assume that a vehicle is excluded solely because it is a plug-in hybrid or because it differs from another Grand Cherokee in body length.
Owners will receive notices in two stages
FCA plans to mail interim safety notices between September 29 and October 7, 2026. These letters will alert owners to the recall before dealerships are ready to complete the repair. A second notice will follow when the remedy is available.
The two-stage process means some owners may learn that their SUV is affected before replacement work can be scheduled. FCA has not provided a confirmed date for parts availability. Owners can contact Jeep at 800-853-1403 and reference recall number 89D; the published model and recall details also identify the campaigns this action replaces.
The unresolved engineering question is why reported spring problems continued after earlier recall actions. For owners, however, the immediate requirement is less ambiguous: an active 89D recall can mean another dealership visit, including for a Grand Cherokee that previously received rear-spring recall work.
