FAA Clears Bye Aerospace eFlyer 2 for Testing, Not Type Certification

Bye Aerospace has received a Federal Aviation Administration Special Airworthiness Certificate for its two-seat eFlyer 2, allowing the U.S.-developed electric trainer to move toward flight testing. The approval follows years of development and months of aircraft-level validation, but it is not type certification, and Bye has not announced a first-flight date.

The FAA issued the certificate after inspecting the aircraft at Centennial Airport near Denver, where Bye is completing flight preparations. According to an account of the inspection and test preparations, the agency reviewed the eFlyer 2’s airframe, electric propulsion system, instruments and other functional systems to assess whether the test aircraft was safe to operate.

That scope matters because an experimental flight-test aircraft must bring several previously separate development efforts together in one functioning platform. Bye completed the eFlyer 2’s structural build in July after structural testing and propulsion-system validation. Engineers tested the full electric powertrain and associated aircraft systems on a truck-mounted rig known as “The Beast” before final integration into the airframe.

The team subsequently conducted additional electrical validation, operational ground testing and final systems-integration work. This progression from component and rig testing to an integrated aircraft inspection is the practical bridge between validating individual hardware and collecting evidence in flight.

CEO Rod Zastrow said Bye has worked with the FAA since 2016 on the certification framework for electric aircraft. Every major milestone in an aircraft program is earned, and this one is the result of intense effort and dedication from a talented team that is passionate about what we do, he said.

Flight authorization opens the next test phase

Bye is now concentrating on final inspections and operational-readiness work before beginning a phased flight-test campaign. The program is intended to expand the aircraft’s operating envelope progressively rather than establish every performance boundary on an initial sortie.

No demonstrated flight envelope, flight-test schedule or first-flight date has been disclosed. The certificate therefore establishes that the specific aircraft is authorized to fly for testing; it does not demonstrate the eFlyer 2’s proposed endurance, cruise performance or readiness for routine flight-school service.

The distinction is particularly important for an electric trainer. Ground rigs can validate propulsion operation, electrical behavior and system integration without exposing a crew or aircraft to flight. Airborne testing must then establish how the complete aircraft behaves across its approved test conditions and provide data needed for the broader certification effort.

The eFlyer 2 uses a Safran ENGINeUS electric motor rated at 150 horsepower, or 110 kilowatts. Bye has selected magniX battery cells for the design. The FAA previously found the aircraft eligible for certification under Amendment 64 of Part 23, the rules governing smaller airplanes. Eligibility defines the certification path; it does not mean the aircraft has completed that path.

Important unresolved items include the limitations attached to the special certificate, the detailed sequence of flight-test points, demonstrated performance and the remaining steps and schedule for type certification. Those results will determine whether the integrated propulsion, battery, electrical and airframe systems satisfy the applicable requirements across the intended operating envelope.

Bye says its combined orderbook for the two-seat eFlyer 2 and four-seat eFlyer 4 exceeds 1,000 aircraft, including orders from Spartan College of Aeronautics & Technology, Skyborne Academy, Flex Air Flight School and KLM Academy. That figure is a company-reported total rather than independently documented demand, and deliveries depend on certification and production progress.

The immediate milestone is narrower but technically consequential: the eFlyer 2 can advance from ground validation into a controlled flight-test program. Its first flight will begin the work of measuring the operating envelope; it will not finish the certification case.
