Lexus Recalls 68,356 NX Crossovers After Displays Hide Critical Warnings

The failure begins during startup. An initialization error can leave portions of the seven-inch digital instrument display blank, preventing a driver from seeing warnings for engine oil pressure, engine coolant temperature or electrical charge. Toyota is recalling 68,356 Lexus NX crossovers to correct the software fault, which can deprive drivers of basic information needed to recognize an overheating engine, lubrication problem or charging-system issue.

The action covers certain Lexus NX vehicles from model years 2022 through 2024. The affected range includes the gasoline NX250 and NX350, the NX350 Hybrid and the plug-in-hybrid NX450h+. According to details published from the federal recall notice, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identifies the campaign as recall 26V687000. Toyota’s internal recall number is 26LA10.

A software error can remove the warning interface

The combination meter is the driver-facing link between several vehicle systems and the person responsible for responding to their condition. Sensors and control modules may still detect a problem, but a warning has limited value if the display layer fails to present it. In the affected NX crossovers, the startup initialization error may blank only certain areas rather than the entire instrument panel, making the failure less obvious than a completely dark display.

The concealed information has direct mechanical significance. Low engine oil pressure can indicate that critical components are not receiving adequate lubrication. Excessive coolant temperature can warn of overheating, while electrical-charge information can alert the driver to a charging-system problem. If those indications are unavailable, a developing condition may continue without the driver recognizing it. The recall documentation identifies severe mechanical damage and an increased chance of a crash as potential consequences.

This is also a human-factors issue rather than merely a screen-quality defect. The driver is part of the vehicle’s warning and response chain: the system detects a condition, presents an understandable signal, and depends on the driver to interpret and act on it. A blank portion of the display breaks that chain at the presentation stage, regardless of whether the underlying sensor and control system continue operating.

Federal requirements reflect the safety role of this interface. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 101 establishes requirements for the location, identification, color and illumination of vehicle controls, telltales and indicators. The broader purpose is to keep essential information visible and recognizable while limiting mistakes and driver distraction. Digital displays can consolidate many functions efficiently, but their software must reliably initialize before those functions can reach the driver.

Owners will need a dealer software update

Lexus dealers will install updated combination-meter software at no charge once the remedy is ready. This is not described as an over-the-air repair, so affected owners will need to take their vehicles to a dealer. Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin mailing December 7, 2026.

Owners can contact Toyota customer care at 1-800-331-4331 and reference recall 26LA10. They will also be able to check their vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall lookup once the affected vehicles become searchable there. The campaign applies to specified vehicles within the listed model years, not every Lexus NX built during that period.

The NX campaign sits within a larger series of Toyota and Lexus display actions. More than 500,000 Camrys were recalled in August 2026 for the same issue. A similar May campaign covered more than 81,000 vehicles, including the Lexus UX and Toyota Land Cruiser, equipped with 12.3-inch displays. Another 591,000 Toyota vehicles were recalled for blank displays about a year earlier. Together, recalls involving similar instrument-display failures have covered more than one million Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

For NX owners, however, the immediate consequence is specific: a software-controlled display intended to communicate basic vehicle health may not complete its startup correctly. The free update is designed to restore that information path before an unseen oil-pressure, overheating or electrical problem becomes a larger mechanical or safety event.
