DroneShield Secures $33M U.S. Counter-Drone Contract

DroneShield, an Australian and U.S.-based specialist in counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS), has secured a $33 million order from a U.S. Government agency for its equipment and multi-year services. Founded in 2014, the company has built a reputation for delivering integrated detection and mitigation solutions against drone threats, leveraging both fixed and portable systems.

The company’s flagship offerings include the DroneSentry detection platform, which provides wide-area monitoring and identification of aerial threats, and the handheld DroneGun series, designed for rapid response in the field. Both employ non-kinetic jamming technology, disrupting communication links between hostile drones and their operators without physical destruction. This approach reduces collateral risk and allows for controlled neutralization, a capability increasingly valued in sensitive operational environments.

While U.S. civil regulations generally prohibit interference with drone operations, government and military agencies operate under different legal frameworks. In those domains, counter-drone systems have become indispensable for safeguarding personnel, infrastructure, and high-profile events. The battlefield utility is clear: small unmanned aircraft can carry surveillance payloads or even weaponized systems, and the ability to detect and disable them before they reach their target is now considered mission-critical.

Matt McCrann, DroneShield’s U.S. CEO, underscored the significance of the award, stating, “We’re honored to receive this award and support this customer. This award is a result of their trust in DroneShield and our solutions, and reflects our commitment to their mission. We’re proud of our team’s efforts, the increasing value we’ve delivered to our customers worldwide, and are excited about continuing to support and grow the business as we look towards 2024 and beyond.”

The $33 million order follows closely on the heels of a $9.9 million contract earlier in the month from another customer within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. The company’s current order backlog stands at a record $62 million, with a forward pipeline exceeding $200 million across more than 80 active opportunities. This trajectory suggests a strong and sustained demand for counter-UAS technologies, driven by both evolving threat landscapes and expanding operational mandates.

DroneShield’s solutions reflect broader trends in the C-UAS sector. Detection systems increasingly integrate multi-sensor arrays—radio frequency analyzers, radar, electro-optical and infrared cameras—to classify and track drones across diverse environments. Mitigation tools, such as the DroneGun, rely on targeted RF disruption, forcing drones to land or return to their point of origin. Such systems must adapt to rapid changes in drone technology, including autonomous navigation and frequency-hopping communications, which challenge traditional jamming methods.

Operational deployment spans military bases, forward operating positions, and civilian venues such as airports, stadiums, and government buildings. In each case, the emphasis is on layered defense: early detection, precise identification, and proportional response. For engineers and technologists, the challenge lies in balancing performance, portability, and compliance with evolving legal frameworks.

The scale of DroneShield’s recent contracts also highlights the growing institutional acceptance of commercial-off-the-shelf C-UAS solutions. Government agencies increasingly seek modular systems that can be integrated into existing command-and-control networks, offering flexibility for both fixed installations and mobile units. The company’s dual presence in Australia and the U.S. positions it to navigate regulatory environments and tailor solutions to diverse operational needs.

As the threat posed by small unmanned systems continues to evolve, investment in counter-drone capabilities is accelerating. The combination of detection precision, non-kinetic mitigation, and scalable deployment models places companies like DroneShield at the forefront of this sector. The recent U.S. Government award not only reinforces confidence in its technology but also signals the strategic importance of counter-UAS measures in modern defense and security operations.
