“Speed is useless without stamina.” This saying is aptly the philosophy on which the new Volkswagen ID.Unyx 08 is built, a full-size EV SUV developed for the highly competitive EV market of China, the result of Volkswagen’s collaboration between subsidiary Volkswagen Anhui and Xpeng Motor Company.

The ID. Unyx 08 is powered by two battery solutions: 82.368 kWh and 95.04 kWh, and boasts CLTC ranges of up to 630 km, 700 km, and an estimated maximum range of up to 730 km. These battery solutions make the model one of the longest-ranging models from the Volkswagen group. The batteries in this model come from CATL and feature lithium-iron phosphate battery chemistry.
Another area where the ID.Unyx 08 excels is charging. Boasting a high 800-volt electrical architecture, the ID.Unyx 08 features ultra-fast DC charging, which cuts charging time dramatically compared to the traditional 400V architecture. Though it’s unclear what the official charging rate for the ID.Unyx 08 is, it’s clear that it’s based on the Xpeng G9 architecture, which supports a maximum rate of 525 kW, a nod to the capabilities of this particular model. The industry as a whole is shifting towards 800V as the new standard for high-performance EVs.
Engine options range from a single electric motor and rear-wheel-drive configuration that delivers 230 kW (308 hp) to dual motors and an all-wheel-drive system that teams a 230 kW rear motor and a 140 kW front motor for combined output of 370 kW (496 hp). When AWD is added, the vehicle can deliver fast acceleration and strong traction both during city driving and when operating at high speeds.
The design language of the ID.Unyx 08 is quite different from VW’s worldwide design language and embodies the automaker’s ambassy concept of ‘In China, for China’. Coming to the front of the car, it sports slim and swooping DRLs encasing the VW emblem, a closed grille for optimal aerodynamics, and a lower intake sporting an angular trapezoidal design. Moving on, the side of the car is defined by dual lines, frameless windows, and flush handles. Moving on, it sports slim taillights merging seamlessly into the VW light emblem, along with the wolf design on the third brake light.
In terms of its dimension, the SUV has a length of 5,000 mm, width of 1,954 mm, and a height ranging from 1,672 mm to 1,688 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm. Its dimensions are larger than the Touareg but slightly smaller than the Atlas, with its longer wheelbase supporting its larger cabin space designed to accommodate five passengers.
The ID.Unyx 08 is likely to come with a wraparound cockpit design featuring environment-friendly and skin-friendly materials, massive infotainment displays, and fewer mechanical controls. The connectivity offerings are likely to include Volkswagen’s new generation ID.OS platform jointly developed with Xpeng, featuring a giant language model-driven intelligent assistant capable of processing intricate voice commands.
The driver assistance system has a level of L2++ autonomy, which provides semi-autonomy in terms of navigating “parking spot to parking spot” solutions within both city and highway settings. Over-the-air update capabilities mean that the system can develop along with advances in artificial intelligence integration andsensor processing efforts. This reflects current trends in the EV industry towards software-defined vehicles, in which hardware solutions are Đồng Time With production expected in 2026 at Volkswagen Anhui’s facility in Hefei, the ID.Unyx 08 will be the second model under the sub-brand, following the ID.Unyx 06 crossover and the ID.Unyx 07 sedan. Volkswagen’s ambitions to offer 30 electrified models in China over the next decade prove the significance of offerings like the Unyx 08 model not only in China’s marketplace but as an example for other regions with respect to electric car designs.
