SpaceX Ends Florida Falcon 9 Starlink Flights, Hands Future to Starship
SpaceX has ended planned Falcon 9 launches dedicated to Starlink from Florida, but its designated replacement is not yet operating there. Following roughly 260 Falcon Starlink missions from the Cape over seven years, the company now intends to put future Florida deployments on the larger, fully reusable-by-design Starship, which remains in development.

The change became official after an August 25, 2026, launch from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. SpaceX Vice President of Launch Kiko Dontchev identified it as the last planned Florida Falcon 9 Starlink flight and said future Starlink missions from the state would use Starship. Falcon 9 Starlink launches will continue from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
This is a workload transfer, not a Falcon 9 retirement. Falcon 9 will continue carrying commercial, government and crewed missions from Florida. SpaceX is separating one repetitive, high-volume internal assignment deploying satellites for its own broadband network from the rocket’s broader manifest.
A proven launch pattern ends
The final flight lifted off at 5:33 a.m. EDT with 29 Starlink satellites, which were deployed into low Earth orbit just over an hour later. It was SpaceX’s 100th Falcon 9 launch of 2026 and the 37th mission for first-stage booster B1067. That booster landed on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas about eight and a half minutes after liftoff.
Those numbers show why the transition is consequential. Falcon 9 has turned booster recovery and repeat flight into routine operations, while supporting a Starlink constellation with more than 11,000 operational spacecraft. Florida Starlink flights also represented 33 of the Cape’s first 54 orbital launches in 2026, making them a substantial part of the region’s launch tempo.
Yet Falcon 9 is only partly reusable. Its first stage returns and can fly again, but the upper stage is expended on every mission. Starship is designed to recover and reuse both its Super Heavy booster and its upper-stage spacecraft. If SpaceX can make that architecture work at high frequency, it could move larger satellite loads without continuously manufacturing replacement upper stages.
That potential is the reason to move a recurring deployment job toward Starship. It is not proof that the new vehicle can already assume Falcon 9’s Florida workload. SpaceX began integrated Starship flight testing in 2023, and the vehicle has not started routine service from Florida. California therefore remains the continuing Falcon 9 outlet for Starlink launches while the Florida system is built and qualified.
Florida needs more than a finished launchpad
SpaceX is developing Starship infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A and Cape Canaveral’s Launch Complex 37. A large manufacturing facility called Gigabay is also under construction at Kennedy, while a proposed static-fire facility near Roberts Road still faces regulatory reviews.
Infrastructure completion is only one gate. The Federal Aviation Administration’s Launch Complex 39A project page explains that Starship launch and landing operations require a new or modified vehicle-operator license. Although the environmental review considered as many as 44 launches and 44 landings of each vehicle stage per year, that analyzed ceiling is not an established flight rate. SpaceX must still satisfy FAA safety, risk and financial-responsibility requirements for licensing.
SpaceX has been targeting its first Florida Starship launch by the end of 2026, but that remains a forward-looking target rather than a completed capability. The same distinction applies to projected Florida launch rates and proposed operations elsewhere: site plans and regulatory envelopes establish what may be pursued, not what the system can reliably deliver.
Reliability is also SpaceX’s stated boundary for the broader transition. Elon Musk said the company would begin shifting scarce engineering and production resources away from Falcon only after Starship was flying reliably several times per week. Until then, Falcon 9 remains responsible for customer payloads and crewed missions that cannot simply wait for Starship’s development program to mature.
Florida’s familiar Starlink cadence has therefore ended before its successor has entered routine local service. The next decisive milestone is not another proposed launch rate; it is Starship’s first Florida flight, followed by evidence that the larger vehicle can repeat missions reliably enough to inherit the workload Falcon 9 performed roughly 260 times.
