National Air Traffic Services Outage Cancels 1,900 Flights, Disruption Persists
A failure in the United Kingdom’s air traffic control system drove more than 1,900 reported flight cancellations beginning September 8, and the disruption continued after flights resumed. The immediate technical issue was resolved, but aircraft and crews stranded in the wrong locations left airlines unable to operate parts of their planned schedules.

National Air Traffic Services said it began investigating a technical issue at 1:46 p.m. Tuesday and later identified the affected system as its flight-processing system. It reported implementing a fix by 4:40 p.m. and said at 7:30 p.m. that the system was resolved and operating normally. NATS has not yet established or publicly disclosed the underlying failure mechanism, however, and a full investigation is planned.
Why cancellations continued after the system recovered
Restoring air traffic control service does not restore an airline network to its previous state. Each scheduled flight depends on several resources arriving together: an aircraft, a qualified crew, an available airport slot, ground support and passengers. When one flight is canceled or substantially delayed, the aircraft and crew assigned to later sectors may no longer be where the schedule requires them.
That explains why the operational effects spread beyond the hours of the outage without establishing anything about its technical cause. Heathrow said flights were operating but warned of knock-on effects as aircraft and crews were repositioned. Gatwick similarly said flights had resumed while cautioning that a full return to normal would take time.
British Airways said it had no choice but to cancel more than 190 flights from its original schedule because aircraft and crews were out of position. Those cancellations should not simply be added to every earlier time-stamped industry figure, because the reporting windows may overlap. Aviation analytics firm Cirium separately recorded more than 1,750 cancellations on Tuesday and 153 early the next day.
Cirium’s 5 a.m. update attributed 225 Tuesday cancellations to British Airways, 219 to easyJet, 105 to Ryanair, 37 to Jet2 and 28 to Loganair. Ryanair said more than 65,000 of its passengers experienced cancellations or delays of up to eight hours. Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, Edinburgh, Luton, Glasgow, London City, Bristol and Aberdeen were among the affected airports.
The investigation must separate fault from recovery
Two questions now require different forms of analysis. The first is what failed inside the flight-processing system and why. The second is how effectively NATS, airports and airlines contained and recovered from the resulting capacity reduction. A system can be technically restored while the transport network remains operationally degraded, so the cancellation count alone cannot answer either question.
The investigation will need to establish the initiating fault, the behavior of safeguards and backup arrangements, the time required to diagnose and correct the problem, and whether recovery planning limited the wider network impact. Until those findings are available, it would be premature to attribute the outage to a specific hardware, software, staffing or maintenance failure.
Repeated incidents increase the importance of that resilience review. Previous NATS disruptions in 2023 and summer 2025 were attributed to information-technology and radar-related problems, respectively. That history does not prove the latest outage had the same cause, but it gives regulators a reason to examine whether corrective actions, redundancy and contingency arrangements are adequate across different failure conditions.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority said NATS will provide a technical report and that the government has requested an independent CAA review into what happened and whether NATS is structured to provide a resilient service. That independent assessment matters because it can test both the technical explanation and the organization’s ability to sustain operations when a critical system becomes unavailable.
Passenger care continues even when compensation may not
The CAA’s preliminary view is that cancellations and delays directly caused by the outage and likely its knock-on effects qualify as “extraordinary circumstances.” Passengers therefore may be unlikely to receive delay or cancellation compensation, although the authority said individual cases remain fact-specific.
Airlines must still offer affected passengers a refund or rerouting and provide proportionate meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during qualifying delays. Where carriers cannot provide care directly, the CAA expects reasonable costs to be reimbursed.
Calls from Ryanair and Wizz Air for NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe to resign remain demands, not an implemented leadership decision. Rolfe apologized and accepted responsibility for the disruption but did not say he would step down. The consequential next step is the technical report: it must explain not only what interrupted flight processing, but why one resolved system issue was able to leave aircraft, crews and passengers displaced across the network for days.
