Army Laser Accompanies 75% Drop in Suspected Cartel Drone Traffic
Seventy-five percent is the reported decline in suspected cartel-linked drone traffic in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley after the U.S. military added an Army high-energy laser to its border defenses. Military and Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the drop, but they have not established that the laser alone caused it.

The change followed a large interception effort. Pentagon officials said forces working with U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command brought down 300 suspected cartel drones during the first eight months of 2026, including 100 in August. The Army bought the laser system in 2025 and fully integrated it into a layered defense network in August. An official Army account said troops used the system on Aug. 25 and 26 to stop three unmanned aircraft considered threatening to military and CBP personnel.
By Sept. 4, military forces had removed 11 drones described as cartel-linked. These figures establish substantial counter-drone activity, but they do not provide a controlled comparison proving that directed energy produced the entire 75% decline. Officials acknowledged that operators could have shifted routes, reduced flights in the monitored area or adopted different surveillance and smuggling methods.
Physical disablement changes the interception equation
The laser adds a different defeat mechanism to a network that previously relied partly on electronic warfare. Jamming disrupts the radio or navigation links needed to control many drones. That can stop or divert an aircraft without physically destroying it, making electronic effects potentially reversible and useful when recovery or temporary disruption is preferred.
The limitation, according to officials, is that a jammed drone can become effective again if its operator restores the connection. A high-energy laser instead places concentrated energy on the aircraft and can physically disable it. That distinction matters in a persistent surveillance environment: interruption may end one phase of a flight, while physical disablement prevents that particular aircraft from reconnecting and continuing its mission.
Neither approach is a universal answer. The Army describes the laser as one part of a layered system rather than a replacement for detection, identification, electronic warfare and other interception options. Layering allows operators to match a response to the object, airspace conditions and available authority. It also reduces dependence on a single technology when weather, range, power, identification confidence or civilian traffic limits an engagement option.
The public information does not identify independent performance data for the deployed system. It therefore cannot establish how many of the 300 reported interceptions involved the laser, how consistently it was available or how its results compared with jamming and other measures. The three engagements on Aug. 25 and 26 are the specifically confirmed laser uses.
Civilian airspace remains a hard operating boundary
Using directed energy near commercial routes requires safeguards beyond those associated with ordinary ground-based counter-drone equipment. The Federal Aviation Administration briefly restricted airspace around El Paso earlier in 2026 amid concerns involving military laser use and testing near civilian traffic. The restriction was lifted within hours.
The FAA and Pentagon subsequently completed a formal safety assessment. Military officials said the agencies now coordinate before and after laser use to protect civilian aircraft, pilots, navigation equipment and air traffic services. That coordination is not a secondary administrative detail; it is part of whether a counter-drone laser can be used reliably in domestic airspace without disrupting airport operations.
Attribution creates another constraint. Officials describe the Rio Grande Valley traffic as suspected or believed to be cartel-linked and say drones are used to support smuggling and watch military and law-enforcement personnel. They have not attributed all observed activity to a specific criminal organization, and military officials have not linked drone activity near Fort Bliss to a named cartel.
U.S. and Mexican authorities are sharing drone information and conducting coordinated operations on their respective sides of the border. That exchange may improve detection and classification across a region where an apparent drop in one monitored corridor could reflect displacement rather than disappearance.
The reported 75% decline is consequently a significant readiness indicator, not a clean measure of laser effectiveness. The next meaningful evidence will be whether lower activity persists across routes and whether the Army can maintain safe, repeatable laser operations alongside civilian aviation rather than merely shifting unmanned traffic elsewhere.
