CES 2023 Showcases Breakthroughs in Mobility Technology

At CES 2023 in Las Vegas, transportation technology commanded a central role, drawing an anticipated 100,000 attendees. Nearly 300 automotive exhibitors filled the show floor, with BMW and Stellantis delivering headline launches and keynote addresses. The event’s scope extended beyond terrestrial mobility, with advanced air mobility companies such as Archer Aviation and Aska unveiling developments that blur the boundaries between cars and aircraft.

Major technology firms including Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Panasonic presented innovations tailored to the evolving automotive ecosystem. Qualcomm’s demonstrations encompassed cockpit systems, connectivity solutions, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), reflecting the increasing integration of high-performance computing into vehicle architectures. BlackBerry showcased connected vehicle platforms, underscoring the growing emphasis on secure, over-the-air software updates and data management.

A company spokesperson described it as “the world’s first electric vehicle that you can drive on the road like a car and fly in the air.” This dual-mode capability points toward a future where personal mobility could seamlessly transition between ground and air travel. Archer Aviation also prepared announcements, signaling progress toward commercializing urban air taxi services. Complementary technologies for automated ground delivery and drone logistics were on display, reflecting a convergence of aerial and terrestrial automation.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares used the CES stage to debut the Ram 1500 Revolution, an all-electric pickup truck designed to combine utility with zero-emission performance. Tavares also outlined the company’s Jeep electrification initiative and confirmed plans for the first Chrysler battery electric vehicle, targeted for a 2025 release. These announcements align with broader industry commitments to electrification, driven by regulatory pressures and consumer demand for sustainable transport.

The EV charging sector was well represented. Blink Charging, Schneider Electric, and ChargePoint showcased equipment and infrastructure solutions aimed at reducing charging times, improving grid integration, and expanding access. Advances in smart charging management, bidirectional energy flow, and modular station design demonstrated how charging technology is evolving to support both residential and commercial deployment.

The presence of aerospace-inspired engineering at CES underscored the interdisciplinary nature of modern mobility innovation. eVTOL prototypes integrate lightweight composite materials, distributed electric propulsion, and advanced flight control systems—technologies that have matured through decades of aerospace research. Similarly, autonomous driving platforms borrow heavily from robotics and machine vision, applying algorithms originally developed for industrial automation and unmanned aerial systems.

For engineers and enthusiasts, the show offered a rare opportunity to see the interplay between hardware and software across domains. Semiconductor advancements enable higher computational throughput for perception and decision-making, while connectivity solutions ensure that vehicles remain part of a broader data ecosystem. In electric mobility, battery management systems, thermal regulation, and power electronics continue to be critical areas of development, influencing both performance and safety.

By bringing together automotive manufacturers, aerospace innovators, and technology suppliers under one roof, CES 2023 illustrated how the future of mobility is being shaped through collaboration across industries.
