On October 9, Shenzhen Hangsheng Electronics Co., Ltd. (HSAE) and global automotive safety systems supplier Autoliv signed an agreement to establish a joint venture in China dedicated to advanced automotive safety electronics. The venture will unite the technical expertise, industrial capabilities, and market resources of both companies to drive research, development, and manufacturing in this specialized field.

The joint company is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026, with headquarters and production facilities in the Yangtze River Delta region. This location places the operation near existing facilities of both partners, enabling efficient logistics and integration with established manufacturing networks. The core product portfolio will include hands-on detection (HOD) systems, pre-pretensioner mechatronic integration (PPMI) units, and other electronic applications for seatbelt systems—components that play critical roles in occupant protection and regulatory compliance.
The collaboration builds on a strategic memorandum of understanding signed in 2024, marking a progression from initial dialogue to formalized cooperation. By merging Autoliv’s global market reach with the efficiency of China’s supply chain, the venture aims to create a platform where international engineering expertise meets local innovation capacity. This synergy is expected to yield benefits in technology integration, cost optimization, customer service, and market expansion.
HSAE and Autoliv’s relationship has strengthened through a series of structured engagements since early 2024. A strategic framework agreement in April set the foundation, followed by a memorandum of understanding in June. Their joint presence at Auto Shanghai 2025 offered a public demonstration of their combined capabilities, showcasing intelligent cockpit safety technologies that integrate sensing, control, and actuation systems into cohesive safety architectures.
Hands-on detection systems, one of the venture’s focal products, are designed to monitor driver engagement with the steering wheel, a critical input for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving functions. Accurate HOD feedback ensures that semi-autonomous features can transition control safely between vehicle and driver. Pre-pretensioner mechatronic integration units represent another area of emphasis. These modules combine mechanical pretensioning of seatbelts with electronic control, enabling rapid restraint deployment in pre-crash scenarios, often milliseconds before impact.
The Yangtze River Delta location offers proximity to a dense network of automotive suppliers, research institutions, and transportation infrastructure. This regional advantage supports rapid prototyping, efficient supply chain coordination, and streamlined distribution to domestic automakers. It also positions the venture to serve as a manufacturing and development hub for export markets, enhancing Autoliv’s ability to deliver advanced safety solutions globally.
Autoliv, known for its leadership in airbags, seatbelts, and steering wheels, brings decades of experience in occupant protection and system integration. HSAE contributes expertise in automotive electronics, including infotainment, telematics, and intelligent cockpit systems. The combination of these competencies allows the joint venture to address the growing demand for electronically controlled safety systems that interface seamlessly with vehicle networks.
The partners have emphasized that their collaboration is not solely about production volume but about accelerating commercialization of next-generation safety technologies. This includes leveraging sensor fusion, embedded control algorithms, and lightweight materials to meet stringent safety standards while supporting vehicle efficiency goals. Such advancements align with broader industry trends toward electrification, automation, and connected mobility.
By targeting both domestic and international markets, the venture reflects a dual strategy: supporting China’s rapidly evolving automotive sector while reinforcing Autoliv’s global supply capabilities. The integration of localized manufacturing with global distribution channels ensures that innovations developed in the Yangtze River Delta can be deployed across diverse vehicle platforms worldwide.
“We are excited to combine our strengths with HSAE to develop advanced safety electronics that will benefit customers in China and globally,” said Mikael Bratt, President and CEO of Autoliv. His statement underscores the strategic intent to merge engineering excellence with market responsiveness, a combination increasingly vital in the competitive automotive safety landscape.
