Bahrain-Italy Alliance Launches Gulf’s First Maritime AM Smart Plant

In a year which sees Gulf manufacturing accelerate its pace towards a high-tech and independent future, a new and groundbreaking initiative has been announced by Bahrain: its first-ever industrial additive manufacturing ‘smart plant’. The new initiative has resulted from a strategic partnership between Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY), Italy’s 3D printing giant Roboze, and world-renowned global shipbuilder Fincantieri and has all the makings of an initiative that could potentially and radically alter the region’s shipbuilding and critical component sectors.
1. Strategic Diplomatic Support
The agreements were reached during Meloni’s attendance at the Gulf Cooperation Council summit, emphasizing the industrial and geopolitical significance of the partnership. According to information from the Palazzo Chigi, the summit marked the parties’ commitment to enhance bilateral ties in accordance with the Strategic Partnership on Investments inked before the year. The number of high-level encounters between Bahrain officials and Meloni in 2025 attests to active engagement. They involve matters of regional security and mutual industrial development.
2. ASRY’s Expanding Maritime Role
ASRY, being the Arabian Gulf’s premier ship repair and fabrication yard, already has a 500,000-deadweight-ton dry dock, two float docks, and 15repair berths on hand. The tie-up between Fincantieri and ASRY covers the possibilities of designing and building naval ships of 80 meters, other offshore units, and Gulf export projects. Of course, this also improves naval and commercial ship/MRO services offered by the company.
3. Roboze’s Gulf Debut
Roboze, with a reputation for high-temperature additive manufacturing solutions for companies like Leonardo, Ferrari, and Fincantieri, makes its first major foray into the Gulf region with this investment. The new facility will assimilate with the Roboze Advanced Manufacturing network, a ‘decentralized smart factory’ to ensure that all approved manufacturing meets a “worldwide recognized specification” to guarantee that Bahrain-made products conform to global standards.
4. High Performance Materials and Processes
The plant will integrate the state-of-the-art 3D printing process with the processing of super-polymers. The light-weight and robust materials that have the ability to replace metals even in harsh climatic conditions have been identified as a Strategic Technology of Interest in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This indicates their value in the sectors where the continuity of operations requires easy access to sturdy components.
5. Target Sectors and Operation Impact
“This partnership will enhance our MRO offerings, allowing us to provide easier access to cutting-edge technical components, which play a critical role in our served industries,” Dr. Ahmed Al Abri, ASRY CEO, said in a statement. The industrial sectors it will benefit include marine MRO, oil, gas, energy, aerospace, and defense services, sectors in which a failure in a component means a complete stop to operations.
6. Foreign Dependency Reduction
At present, many Gulf operators depend on foreign firms for the supply of specialized parts and so experience delays that can last for weeks. This approach by the new manufacturing unit will eliminate such issues and fit in with Bahrain’s economic plan to develop its manufacturing base and build technical skills in their workforce.
7. Integration with Fincantieri’s Naval Expert
In Addition to Additive Manufacturing, the contract between ASRY and Fincantieri also covers knowledge sharing in the field of ship design as well as optimization of the ship production processes.
