Boeing 737 Flight Tests End, but Only Smaller Model Wins Approval

Finishing a certification flight-test campaign does not certify an airplane. Boeing crossed that testing threshold for the smallest and largest members of its 737 MAX family, but the two aircraft have since emerged with different regulatory status: the Federal Aviation Administration approved the smaller 737-7 on August 3, while the larger 737-10 still requires FAA approval before deliveries can begin.

Boeing announced on July 28 that both variants had completed certification flight testing. Six days later, the FAA issued an amended type certificate for the 737-7, confirming that the aircraft met applicable design and safety requirements. That subsequent decision illustrates the distinction between completing test flights and completing certification. The 737-10 has cleared a major technical phase, but data review, safety assessments and final regulatory findings remain consequential work rather than administrative formality.

The scale of the larger aircraft’s campaign was substantial. Three 737-10 test airplanes accumulated 976 certification flights, more than 2,060 flight hours and roughly 1,040 ground-test hours. The work included wet-runway braking, maximum-energy rejected takeoffs, a redesigned engine anti-ice system and an enhanced angle-of-attack setup intended to reduce spurious cockpit warnings.

Those tests address markedly different certification demands. Braking trials establish aircraft performance under defined runway and energy conditions. The engine anti-ice work concerns thermal control around the engine inlet, while the angle-of-attack changes affect how sensor faults and associated warnings are presented to the flight crew. Together, they show why a derivative aircraft can require an extensive campaign even when it belongs to an established airplane family.

The redesigned anti-ice system is particularly important to the remaining certification story. Engine anti-ice routes hot air to the inlet to prevent ice accumulation in cold, moist conditions. The updated design addresses the possibility that continued operation outside icing conditions could overheat the inlet and potentially weaken surrounding structure. The FAA identified the redesigned system among the improvements incorporated into the now-approved 737-7.

The enhanced angle-of-attack arrangement is intended to simplify cockpit effects when the system detects a sensor problem and reduce persistent or misleading warnings. Boeing has said both the anti-ice and enhanced angle-of-attack changes are intended for newly built 737 MAX aircraft and for retrofit across the in-service fleet. That broad application makes the certification work more than a matter of clearing two new variants: it also carries production, modification and maintenance-planning consequences for existing aircraft.

The final 737-10 certification sortie was less dramatic but equally illustrative of certification’s reach. It was an interiors test checking whether the lavatory smoke detector and cabin speakers could be heard over ambient aircraft noise. Boeing test pilot Dan Mangel flew that sortie four years after conducting the same airframe’s first flight, taking one test aircraft from the beginning to the end of its airborne certification campaign.

Once flying ends, the burden shifts toward showing that the complete design record supports the test results. Remaining 737-10 tasks include development-assurance reviews, system-safety assessments, completion of documentation and delivery of final data to the FAA. Development assurance examines whether the design and verification process performed the work it was required to perform; system-safety analysis considers how failures and combinations of failures are addressed across the aircraft.

The 737-7 was already further through this phase when Boeing announced flight-test completion, with roughly 95% of its required document submissions complete. Its August 3 approval demonstrates how quickly the final decision can follow once the regulator is satisfied, but it does not establish a schedule for the 737-10. Each model must support its own compliance findings.

Boeing has targeted 737-10 certification in 2026 and initial customer deliveries in 2027. Those remain company targets, not completed milestones. United and Delta are awaiting the larger model, while Southwest is preparing for the smaller 737-7 following its certification.

The 976-flight campaign means Boeing no longer needs to prove the 737-10 through planned certification sorties. It still must prove, through the complete body of data and analysis, that those sorties support every required FAA finding. Until that review produces an amended type certificate, the largest 737 remains a tested aircraft rather than a deliverable one.
