GM 6.2-Liter V8 Recall Includes 10-Year, 150,000-Mile Engine Coverage
General Motors is providing special engine coverage for vehicles included in its L87 6.2-liter V8 recall for 10 years from the original in-service date or 150,000 miles. The protection applies after either inspection outcome: recalled engines that fail inspection receive a no-cost replacement, while vehicles that pass remain covered if the engine later fails.
That coverage should not be confused with the scope of the federal investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s inquiry now covers 997,743 model-year 2021-2026 vehicles, but GM has not expanded its recall beyond 597,630 model-year 2021-2024 vehicles in the United States, according to the Detroit Free Press. The difference determines which vehicles currently receive the recall remedy and special coverage, even as regulators examine a substantially larger population.
Coverage provides a backstop after the inspection
GM’s recall process divides the covered vehicles into two groups. An engine that does not pass the prescribed inspection receives a complete replacement at no cost. An engine that passes remains in service after an oil-viscosity change, along with a replacement oil filter and oil-fill cap. The extended coverage creates a second layer of protection because passing the inspection does not end GM’s responsibility for a later covered engine failure during the stated period.
That distinction matters for owners who may otherwise interpret a completed recall visit as a definitive finding that the engine cannot experience the problem later. An inspection is a condition assessment performed at a particular point in the engine’s operating life. Special coverage acknowledges that an engine cleared to remain in service may still require support afterward.
The coverage also applies to recalled vehicles whose engines failed inspection and were replaced. That is significant because NHTSA is examining reported failures after both forms of remedy, including a smaller number involving replacement engines. Those reports have not yet established that every failure had the same cause or that either remedy is broadly ineffective. They do, however, explain why post-repair protection and continued regulatory review are separate parts of the response.
The investigation is broader than the recall
NHTSA upgraded its review to Engineering Analysis EA26005 on August 20, 2026. Its population includes model years 2021 through 2026, extending beyond the vehicles currently included in GM’s recall. Regulators are examining whether failures occurred outside the original production period and whether completed remedies adequately address the safety concern.
The inquiry includes 499 complaints submitted to NHTSA alleging post-remedy engine failure. Of those, 473 involved vehicles that had received the oil-viscosity remedy and 26 involved complete engine replacements. GM reported receiving 6,953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure, while another 191 reported failures involved engines produced after the May 31, 2024 cutoff associated with the recalled production period. Complaint totals are investigative inputs, not final findings about cause, defect rate or remedy effectiveness.
GM previously attributed elevated failure rates among certain L87 engines built from March 1, 2021, through May 31, 2024, to manufacturing issues. These included sediment contamination capable of damaging connecting-rod bearings and crankshafts produced outside specification with an improper surface finish. Internal damage can lead to engine failure and loss of motive power, but NHTSA has not yet published a final conclusion establishing how the post-remedy and later-production reports relate to those identified conditions.
The L87 is installed in high-volume trucks and SUVs, including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon; and Cadillac Escalade. A vehicle’s inclusion in the broader investigation does not by itself mean it has been recalled or receives the 10-year, 150,000-mile special coverage. At present, that protection remains tied to the 597,630 recalled model-year 2021-2024 vehicles.
The unresolved question is therefore larger than whether GM offers support when a recalled engine fails again. The special coverage provides a defined financial and service backstop, but NHTSA’s analysis must determine whether the existing recall population and remedies adequately address the reported loss-of-power risk or whether further action is warranted for vehicles outside today’s recall boundary.
