Tesla Extends Cybertruck Charging Hardware Warranty After Reported $7,200 Repair Bills
A single power-electronics failure could leave an early Tesla Cybertruck owner facing a reported repair bill of up to $7,200 after the truck’s basic warranty expired. Tesla has now shifted much of that financial risk back to itself, extending coverage for the affected power conversion system in 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks to eight years or 150,000 miles.

The component-specific protection is substantially longer than Tesla’s basic vehicle warranty of four years or 50,000 miles. Tesla said the power conversion electronics in Cybertrucks built before the 2026 model year did not meet its reliability standards. The extended coverage applies to both Foundation Series and standard-production trucks, and owners who paid for qualifying repairs are slated to receive reimbursement.
Why this component matters
The power conversion system performs more than one electrical job. It supports onboard AC charging, converting electricity supplied by home and other Level 2 chargers into the DC power stored in the high-voltage battery. It also provides DC-to-DC conversion needed by other parts of the truck’s electrical architecture.
Some owners reported that home-charging current declined from 48 amps to 24 amps before the system failed completely. Those accounts describe symptoms, not a universal diagnostic sequence, and they do not establish that every truck will behave the same way. Reported out-of-pocket repair costs ranged from $5,000 to $7,200. Before formalizing the longer warranty, Tesla had reportedly reduced some owners’ bills to approximately $1,000 through discounted repairs.
The service work is also more involved than exchanging a readily accessible module. Tesla’s power conversion system replacement procedure calls for trained technicians, high-voltage disablement, insulating protective equipment, coolant handling, electrical-joint testing and software reinstallation. That service complexity helps explain why the financial exposure extends beyond the price of the electronics themselves.
Software preserves a charging option but does not repair the hardware
Tesla has also issued a software update that allows an affected Cybertruck to continue using Tesla Superchargers following a power conversion system failure. This can reduce the risk of an owner losing every practical charging option while waiting for service. Tesla is reportedly covering Supercharging costs for some affected owners while replacement components remain scarce.
That update is an operational workaround, not a hardware repair. Supercharging supplies DC power through a different charging path, while home AC charging depends on onboard conversion. Preserving DC fast-charging access can therefore maintain limited vehicle usability, but the failed power conversion hardware still requires service.
This distinction illustrates how software-defined vehicles can isolate or bypass some consequences of a component fault without restoring the component itself. It is useful resilience, particularly during a parts shortage, but it also transfers inconvenience to owners who may need to substitute Supercharger visits for routine charging at home.
The 2026 redesign carries different coverage
The 2026 Cybertruck uses a redesigned power conversion system and receives a separate warranty of seven years or 70,000 miles for that component. The design change confirms that Tesla altered the hardware approach, but there are no supporting field data establishing that the newer system has proved more reliable. Its shorter mileage coverage also means buyers should not assume the 2024-2025 extension automatically applies to the redesigned unit.
An informal owner poll found that 91 of 223 respondents, or about 41%, said their power conversion system had been replaced. Because participation was self-selected and the respondents were not a scientific sample of the Cybertruck fleet, that result cannot be treated as a fleet-wide failure rate. Tesla’s own statement that the pre-2026 electronics missed its reliability standards is the firmer basis for assessing the warranty decision.
Longer coverage changes who pays, but it does not by itself determine how quickly trucks are repaired. The remaining practical tests are replacement-part availability and the pace of reimbursements for qualifying owners who already paid. Until that work is completed, the software workaround may keep some trucks mobile, while the eight-year or 150,000-mile warranty provides the more consequential protection against another reported four-figure bill.
