Engineering Circularity: Ten Brands Redefining Waste in 2020
In 2020, while global supply chains strained under the pandemic and consumer behavior shifted dramatically, several major brands advanced ambitious circular economy initiatives. These efforts, rooted in engineering ingenuity and material science, demonstrated that product performance and sustainability can be mutually reinforcing.

Nike integrated recycled materials into a broad range of products, from a Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star variant to an “exploratory footwear collection” composed of factory and post-consumer waste. The most technically notable development was the competition apparel for the Tokyo Olympics, designed for athletes from the U.S., France, and Brazil. These uniforms, made entirely from recycled polyester, were engineered to meet elite performance standards despite their unconventional feedstock.
Burger King entered the reuse space through a partnership with TerraCycle’s Loop platform. The trial, set for select locations in New York, Portland, and Tokyo, applies deposit-based logistics to reusable sandwich and drink containers. Customers return the containers to in-store collection points, where they undergo industrial sanitation before reentering circulation. This system aligns with the chain’s target of sourcing all packaging from renewable, recyclable, or certified inputs by 2025.
Loop itself expanded its operational footprint to all 48 contiguous U.S. states. Its closed-loop distribution model delivers consumer goods in durable containers, collected after use for cleaning and refilling. “Consumers are understandably anxious in this new world, but they still want to make purposeful purchases,” said Heather Crawford, Loop’s global VP of marketing and e-commerce. She emphasized that meeting customers in their current online environments, while ensuring hygienic handling, has sustained adoption.
Ikea launched its “Buy Back” program across 27 countries, offering up to 50 percent of an item’s original price in store credit for returned furniture. Returned items are resold, recycled, or donated, diverting significant material volumes from landfills. The program’s design requires reverse logistics integration and quality assessment protocols to handle diverse product conditions.
Adidas introduced a fully recyclable Ultraboost running shoe, engineered from a single material without adhesives. This mono-material approach simplifies end-of-life processing, as components can be mechanically recycled without separation. The company’s ongoing collaboration with Parley for the Oceans has already yielded millions of pairs made from reclaimed marine plastics.
Puma’s collaboration with the First Mile Coalition channels plastic waste collected by self-employed workers in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti into new apparel. This initiative merges material recovery with socioeconomic impact, creating revenue streams in regions lacking formal waste infrastructure. “We hope that whoever buys this collection feels good about this purchase… knowing that those entrepreneurs in the first mile are being connected to this product,” said Kelsey Halling, head of partnerships for First Mile.
Patagonia expanded its Worn Wear program, integrating repair guides developed with iFixit to enable customer-led maintenance. The company also placed used product purchase options alongside new listings online, making reuse a visible and convenient choice. Its ReCrafted line transforms heavily damaged goods into unique items, extending material life cycles through creative reengineering.
H&M’s fall/winter 2020 collection explored biodegradable textiles derived from wood pulp and food waste. “For A/W20, we really wanted to be trailblazers – pushing the limits of creativity and sustainable fashion – by focusing on waste,” said Ann-Sofie Johansson, the brand’s creative advisor. Such material experimentation requires precise control over fiber properties to meet durability and aesthetic requirements.
HP unveiled what it described as “the world’s most sustainable PC portfolio,” incorporating ocean-bound plastics into devices such as Chromebooks. This builds on earlier milestones, including monitors and PCs utilizing recovered marine plastics. The engineering challenge lies in processing these materials to meet strict mechanical and thermal performance specifications for electronics.
The North Face advanced its Renewed program with an in-house design residency at its Renewal Workshop in Oregon. Designers repurpose garments deemed irreparable into one-of-a-kind pieces, applying textile reconstruction techniques to extend product lifespans. The program has already diverted over 200,000 pounds of clothing from landfills, underscoring the scalability of repair-centric manufacturing models.
