Humanoid Robotics Funding Surges Amid Bold Ambitions

In 2024, robotics investment activity may not have matched the record-breaking peaks of earlier years, yet it stood out for its concentration on high-profile, futuristic projects. The largest funding rounds clustered around companies pursuing humanoid robots and advanced AI control systems, signaling a shift toward versatile, multi-role machines rather than narrowly specialized automation.

A striking example is Figure, a Silicon Valley startup founded in 2022 with the stated mission of “bringing a general purpose humanoid to life.” In February, Figure secured $675 million in Series B funding to accelerate development of robots aimed at performing unsafe and undesirable jobs. Founder Brett Adcock underscored the scale of the opportunity, noting that “there are over 10 million unsafe or undesirable jobs in the U.S. alone,” and warning that demographic trends will exacerbate labor shortages.

Another major player, Physical Intelligence, emerged only this year in San Francisco. Specializing in AI “robot brains” capable of controlling diverse platforms, it closed a $400 million round at a $2 billion valuation. The emphasis on adaptable intelligence was echoed by Pittsburgh-based Skild AI, which raised $300 million in Series A funding at a $1.5 billion valuation to develop brain models deployable across multiple robot types and tasks.

Collaborative Robotics, based in Silicon Valley, attracted $100 million in Series B financing to advance “practical collaborative robots” designed to work alongside humans in manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Bright Machines, also in San Francisco, secured $106 million in equity funding to expand its portfolio of flexible factory automation systems. On the domestic front, The Bot Company—launched by Cruise founder Kyle Vogt—closed $150 million in initial funding to create household robots capable of tackling a range of chores.

Crunchbase data indicates that robotics startups collectively raised approximately $7.2 billion across seed to growth stages in 2024. While slightly above the prior year’s tally, this remains well below the 2021 peak. The investment pattern suggests a strong appetite for early-stage ventures with broad application potential.

High-profile backers are reinforcing this momentum. Jeff Bezos, through Bezos Expeditions and related investment vehicles, participated in at least four major rounds this year, supporting Figure, Physical Intelligence, Skild AI, and Swiss-Mile—a company developing wheel-legged robots. Bezos’s history with warehouse automation underscores his interest in robotics that can address labor-intensive operations.

Outside the humanoid and AI brain sectors, surgical robotics continued to attract substantial capital. MMI, focused on robotic-assisted microsurgical procedures, and Capstan Medical, developing less invasive robotics-enabled heart surgery technologies, each raised $110 million in Series C funding. In aerial and ground mobility, Skydio extended its enterprise and military drone offerings with a $170 million round, while Forterra, specializing in autonomous ground transport for military logistics, secured $75 million in Series B financing.

The prevailing stage for many of these ventures remains what observers describe as “fun to watch”—early in their commercial journey, rich in ambition, and with limited immediate pressure to deliver consistent revenue. Figure openly acknowledges the stakes, stating in its master plan: “We face high risk and extremely low chances of success. However, if we are successful, we have the potential to positively impact humanity and to build the largest company on the planet.”

For engineers, students, and enthusiasts tracking the evolution of robotics, these developments highlight a pivotal moment. The convergence of humanoid form factors, adaptable AI control systems, and targeted applications in industrial, domestic, medical, and defense contexts is reshaping the boundaries of what robots can do. While the financial scale is impressive, the technological breadth—spanning mechanical design, autonomous navigation, human-robot interaction, and precision surgical actuation—underscores the complexity of bringing these visions to market.
