Taiwan Targets 100,000 Drones a Month by 2030
100,000 drones a month is the number Taiwan says it wants to reach by 2030. That goal, reported Aug. 9, sits alongside an even larger military demand signal: more than 210,000 aerial and sea-based unmanned systems for Taiwan’s forces.

The scale alone is enough to put Taiwan in the front rank of non-Chinese drone manufacturing ambitions. But the more important question is whether production capacity can be turned into usable combat mass. Experts cited in the reporting say the harder job is not building airframes. It is building the training pipeline, command structure, doctrine, and unit organization needed to operate large unmanned fleets effectively.
Taiwanese officials have acknowledged the late start. Lt. Gen. Huang Wen-chi, director general of strategic planning for Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, said Taiwan’s drone and counter-drone efforts “started relatively late,” though he also said the approach has shifted significantly over the past two years. The broader plan has drawn on lessons from Ukraine, where relatively inexpensive drones have been used at scale against a larger adversary.
That distinction matters because a fleet of 210,000 systems is not one capability. It is many capabilities that have to be matched to different missions, operators, maintenance demands, and control methods. The Australian Army Research Centre noted in a recent paper on drone warfare that unmanned systems now affect reconnaissance, command and control, fire support, logistics, and deception, and that effective use depends on dedicated teams, redundant communications, and continuous adaptation in doctrine and force design. In other words, mass procurement does not automatically create an effective drone force.
Taiwan’s industrial base is moving quickly enough to make the manufacturing target look less abstract than it first sounds. According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, current monthly production capacity is about 15,000 units, with a government projection that it can exceed 100,000 per month by 2030 as demand rises and scale improves. The ministry has also said about half of that future output is intended for export, a sign that Taipei is not only trying to equip its own forces but also to establish itself as a non-Chinese supplier for allied markets.
Export numbers show that shift is already underway. Taiwan exported $115 million worth of drones in the first three months of 2026, surpassing its total drone exports for all of 2025. In a separate ministry briefing, officials put 2025 drone exports at $93 million and said the Czech Republic, Poland, and the United States were among the leading destinations. That matters because Taiwan is trying to sell not just finished drones, but also components and subsystems to buyers looking to reduce dependence on Chinese-made parts.
Still, supply-chain independence remains incomplete. Research from Taiwan-based think tank DSET says the share of Taiwan-made drones using Chinese battery cells has fallen from around 70 percent to 50 percent, but upstream dependence remains a structural problem. The report argues that key battery materials and processing steps are still heavily dominated by China, and that building a truly non-Chinese drone supply chain will require larger, more standardized demand and a longer-term industrial strategy. For a country trying to market secure, allied-compatible drones, that is not a side issue. It is part of the product definition.
The military procurement side is also becoming more concrete. A July report said Taiwan’s proposed drone funding would cover 208,200 one-way attack drones, 1,446 reconnaissance drones, and 1,320 unmanned surface vessels, numbers that align with the broader figure of more than 210,000 aerial and maritime systems. That mix helps explain why training and doctrine may become the real bottleneck. A small reconnaissance drone, a one-way attack system, and an unmanned surface vessel do not share the same crews, support equipment, software workflows, or command relationships.
Regional competition adds pressure. Japan has allocated roughly $1.7 billion in its fiscal 2026 budget for unmanned systems development, while China has publicly showcased swarm-control concepts including a system it says can coordinate up to 96 fixed-wing drones from one command vehicle. Taiwan is therefore trying to solve two problems at once: build enough industrial scale to matter, and build enough organizational competence to use that hardware before a crisis forces improvisation.
That is why the 100,000-a-month target is best read as a starting point, not a finish line. Taiwan may be able to build a large drone industry and become a significant non-Chinese supplier. The tougher test is whether factories, training units, procurement plans, and command systems can mature at the same speed.
