Counter-Drone Directory Tallies $53 Billion, but Commitments Outrun Firm Contracts
More than USD53 billion is the headline number attached to publicly announced counter-drone spending and commitments in 2026. The September 2026 Unmanned Airspace Counter-UAS Directory says governments have reached that scale as they expand systems for detecting, tracking and stopping unauthorized or hostile drones.

The total is substantial, but it is not equivalent to USD53 billion in finalized purchases ready to enter production. The directory’s tally appears to combine firm contracts, procurement allocations, assistance budgets and longer-term investment plans. It also describes its measurement window inconsistently, referring both to January through September and to the first eight months of 2026. Those boundaries make the figure useful as a measure of policy and procurement momentum, but less suitable as a direct measure of booked manufacturing work.
A USD20 billion U.S. award leads the list
The largest individual commitment cited is a March 2026 U.S. Army firm-fixed-price contract with Anduril Industries, reported at a cumulative USD20 billion over 10 years. Its scope extends beyond a single interceptor or sensor: it covers counter-drone systems, Anduril’s open-architecture Lattice suite, integrated hardware, data and computing infrastructure, and technical support.
That breadth matters because counter-drone capability is an integration problem as much as a hardware-purchasing exercise. Sensors must produce usable tracks, command-and-control software must combine information from different sources, and an authorized operator must be able to select an appropriate response. A large contract ceiling or cumulative value does not establish how much equipment has already been ordered, delivered or accepted.
Poland’s SAN CUAS program is the second-largest publicly recorded contract in the directory, valued at USD4.2 billion and awarded to a consortium of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa. The program illustrates the layered approach now shaping procurement: multiple sensors and response systems are connected through a common command-and-control architecture rather than treated as isolated products.
Belgium and the Netherlands separately announced a joint EUR3.1 billion purchase of layered air-defense systems, including ammunition, in July. NATO allies have also announced plans to invest more than USD40 billion in counter-drone capabilities over five years. That alliance-wide plan should not be read as another fully contracted amount that can automatically be added to national awards. Its longer time horizon and planning status differ from an awarded procurement contract.
Marketplaces are becoming part of the system
The spending surge is also changing how governments evaluate suppliers. Ukraine’s Brave1 initiative, UNITE–Brave NATO, the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance and the U.S. Joint Interagency Task Force 401 marketplace are intended to shorten the path between developers and authorized users.
For manufacturers, these marketplaces can reduce the difficulty of getting a product seen by multiple agencies. For buyers, their more important function is validation: organizing performance information, matching systems to requirements and connecting approved products with existing acquisition channels. That does not eliminate testing, cybersecurity reviews, airspace coordination or integration work, but it can prevent every organization from beginning its search independently.
The supplier field is already broad. The directory’s latest edition contains 654 company entries, more than 1,000 system descriptions, 78 new entries and 56 updates. It lists 100 manufacturers of interceptor drones and their products. Such variety can encourage competition, but it also increases the importance of common interfaces, configuration control and reliable performance data. A sensor, command system and interceptor from different suppliers must work as one operational chain if the investment is to produce usable capacity.
Civilian deployment still faces two hard limits
Money and product availability do not resolve who can detect a drone consistently or who may lawfully act against it. A July 2026 DroneShield survey cited in the directory found that 70% of respondents identified detection gaps, while 60% said they lacked legal authority to mitigate unauthorized drones.
Those findings came from a supplier survey rather than a government-wide audit, so they should not be generalized to every facility. Even so, they identify distinct constraints. Detection gaps are a technical and integration issue involving sensor coverage and track quality. Mitigation authority is a legal and institutional issue: an organization may recognize an unauthorized aircraft without having permission to interfere with or stop it.
The USD53 billion estimate therefore captures an extraordinary expansion in public commitments, not an equally mature global counter-drone network. The practical result will depend on how much of the announced money becomes funded orders, how reliably components integrate and whether authorized operators can legally use the systems governments are paying to install.
