U.S. Military Says It Took Down About 100 Suspected Cartel Drones in August
Approximately 100 suspected cartel drones were taken down along the southern border in August, according to a senior U.S. defense official. Task Force–Southern Border reportedly conducted the operations with specialized counter-drone equipment supplied and integrated by other military units, revealing a monthly operating tempo that goes well beyond an occasional drone encounter.

The number requires two important qualifications. The Pentagon confirmed that defensive counter-drone technology is being used to protect personnel and border-security operations, but its public statement did not independently provide the August total. Officials also have not released an incident-by-incident record, identified the equipment used in each case, or defined what counted as a “takedown.” The figure and the drones’ suspected cartel connection therefore remain attributed to the senior official.
That missing definition matters because counter-drone operations do not necessarily end with an aircraft being physically destroyed. Depending on the technology and circumstances, an intervention can involve detection, tracking, identification, electronic disruption, interception or physical defeat. No public breakdown shows how the approximately 100 reported actions were divided among those outcomes.
The Pentagon has acknowledged that laser systems are among the technologies involved in the broader border effort. However, officials have not said that a laser produced all or even most of the August results. Treating the count as a score for one interceptor would obscure the more consequential systems story: the military describes the mission as a layered defense built from multiple technologies, trained operators, updated authorities and equipment integrated across units.
A counter-drone network, not a single device
Layering is necessary because finding and classifying a small aircraft can be as demanding as stopping it. Sensors must first generate usable tracks, operators must distinguish a relevant aircraft from other activity, and command systems must move that information to personnel authorized to respond. The mitigation equipment is only one component in that chain.
That broader detection challenge is not limited to the border. On August 13, Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Jarrard, deputy commander of U.S. Northern Command, said the command did not have enough sensors for the growing domestic drone threat. As described in a National Defense Magazine account of his remarks, Northern Command’s mobile counter-drone packages combine sensors and mitigation equipment into deployable systems. His comments underscore why a reported takedown total alone cannot measure the readiness of the entire network.
Integration also determines whether equipment from different military organizations can function as one defensive architecture. A sensor, command interface and countermeasure may each perform as designed in isolation yet still leave operational gaps if their data, procedures or authorities do not align. Task Force–Southern Border’s reliance on equipment provided and integrated by other units makes configuration control, operator training and cross-unit support part of the mission not back-office details.
Coordination is another layer
Every operation was planned and coordinated with Mexican military and border authorities, according to the Pentagon. Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson said that coordination was intended to provide safety and deconfliction on both sides of the border. In practical terms, counter-drone readiness here includes communication and authorization processes alongside sensors and interceptors.
The reported August activity sits within a much larger volume of unmanned-aircraft observations. Customs and Border Protection previously reported more than 10,000 drone incursions and 25,000 drone detections in the Rio Grande Valley during a one-year period, figures cited in a congressional request for border-incursion data. Those categories are not equivalent to the approximately 100 August takedowns, but they illustrate why detection volume, confirmed threats and actual interventions must be reported separately.
The August disclosure establishes that military counter-drone systems are being used frequently enough to produce roughly 100 reported interventions in one month. What remains unresolved is equally significant: officials have not publicly defined the result, documented the count case by case or shown which layers of the defensive network produced it. Until that detail emerges, the strongest supported conclusion is not that one technology solved the problem, but that border counter-drone operations have become an integrated mission involving equipment, people, authorities and international coordination.
