Ford Plans $1 Billion Kentucky Paint Shop, but Gives No Completion Date

One billion dollars is going into a single production stage at the Ford factory responsible for some of the automaker’s most recognizable and valuable vehicles. Ford announced on September 10 that it will build a replacement paint shop at Kentucky Truck Plant, with groundbreaking expected by late 2026. The company’s official project announcement does not provide a completion date.

The Louisville plant assembles F-Series Super Duty pickups, including the F-250 through F-550, along with the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Ford describes Kentucky Truck Plant as its largest and highest-revenue U.S. manufacturing plant and says a vehicle leaves its assembly line every 45 seconds. That production pace helps explain why replacing one of its central process facilities is a substantial manufacturing project rather than a routine equipment update.

Paint shops are among the most critical and costly systems in an automotive assembly plant. Ford says the new facility will replace the existing shop and use upgraded technology to provide cleaner, more efficient paint quality while improving production efficiency and environmental sustainability. It has not released detailed performance targets for those improvements.

The investment therefore supports modernization, but it should not yet be read as a confirmed expansion in plant capacity. Ford has not quantified an increase in vehicles produced, disclosed a new output target or connected the project to additional employment. The announced benefit is a newer paint operation supporting continued production at the existing truck and SUV plant, not a specified increase in assembly volume.

That distinction matters because paint operations must remain aligned with the rest of a factory’s production system. A faster or more efficient process creates a measurable output gain only if upstream body production, downstream assembly, material flow and quality controls can use the additional capability. Ford has not disclosed whether the replacement is designed to raise the plant’s maximum throughput, reduce operating constraints, improve finish consistency or deliver some combination of those results.

Ford spokesperson Christina Audisho said construction would not affect vehicle production at the plant. Maintaining output while installing a replacement for a critical manufacturing operation will make project sequencing and systems integration important, although Ford has not described how or when production will transition from the existing paint shop to the new one. Without a completion date, the duration of that work and the point at which the new facility begins contributing to operations remain unknown.

The $1 billion project follows roughly $4 billion in other recently announced Ford investments in Kentucky. Those include approximately $2 billion to transform Louisville Assembly Plant for a new electric-vehicle manufacturing system and about $2 billion to convert a former battery site in Glendale into a producer of battery energy-storage systems. The paint-shop project is distinct because it supports Ford’s established heavy-duty pickup and large-SUV production rather than a new vehicle platform or energy-storage business.

The announcement also arrived two days after federal criticism of Ford’s manufacturing relationships with Chinese companies. Ford rejected that criticism as a “wrongheaded attempt to capture headlines,” and the White House subsequently called Ford “a GREAT American company.” The timing establishes a sequence, but it does not establish that the exchange caused or accelerated the Kentucky investment.

For Kentucky Truck Plant, the confirmed change is both narrower and more concrete: Ford is committing $1 billion to replace the paint system serving Super Duty trucks, Expeditions and Navigators. Groundbreaking has a late-2026 target, and Ford says current vehicle production will continue during construction. What remains undisclosed is when the new shop will be finished and how much measurable improvement that billion-dollar replacement will ultimately deliver.
